1795

Charles Morgan is born in Killingsworth, Conn.

1797

July 3 - The Berwick family is given a land grant for Tiger Island, the ridge upon which Morgan City is built.

1808

Franklin in founded as Carlin's Settlement.

1811

Aug. 27 - St. Mary Parish is formed from St. Martin.  Franklin becomes the parish seat.

1816

Dr. Walter Brashear acquires Tiger Island.

1820

Franklin is officially incorporated as a village

1832

Capt. John Patterson comes to the place then known as Dutch Settlement.

1835

Charles Morgan's side-wheeler steams down the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico, heading for Galveston. It is the first steamship to navigate in the gulf of Mexico.

1847

The first school in St. Mary Parish is established at what will become Patterson

1848

The post office is moved from Charpentier Plantation to Dutch Settlement, wich is renamed Pattersonville.

1851

The original courthouse in Franklin is replaced with a brick building.

1852

December - Fire destroys most of the village of Charenton.

1853

 August - a yellow fever scare brings a quarantine to Franklin.

1855

A post office is established at "the new town of Brashear," as Morgan City was then called.

1857

The New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad reaches Berwick Bay.

1859

June 6 - Fire razed the Catholic chapel and presbytery at Brashear City.

1860

March 8 - Brashear City is formally incorporated.

1867

A yellow fever epidemic strikes Brashear City.

1869

May 25 - Charles Morgan buys the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad and combines it with his steamship company.

1873

Feb. 25 - An Act of Congress approves the enlargement of the Collection District of the Teche, making Brashear a port of entry.

Charles Morgan Begins dredging a 10-footdeep channel through Atchafalaya Bay.

1876

May - Brasher changes its name to Morgan City.

1881

Feb. 24 - Six inches of snow falls in Morgan City

1882

A railroad bridge is completed over Berwick Bay.

1893

Construction begins on St. Mary Central High School in Franklin.

1895

The Cumberland Telephone & Telegraph Co. establishes a citywide system in Franklin.

1896

Capt. A.F. Lucas discovers salt at belle Isle.

1897

The town of Patterson is incorporated.

1913

July14 - The town of Baldwin is incorporated.
